The 2013 FAWCO Conference in Bern, Switzerland.

FAWCO is the acronym for the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas.  AWC Basel is a member of FAWCO, and through our association with it we are able to affect meaningful change in the world. Together with other American Women’s Clubs around the world we are able to participate in charity projects on a global scale. Our expat voices and concerns are heard via FAWCO representatives at the UN and FAWCO lobbyists to Congress. FAWCO clubs stretch across six continents — from Norway to Kenya, and from Antigua to Australia. The issues that FAWCO addresses include overseas voter registration; dissemination of information about U.S. citizenship, living and working abroad; support for literacy and training programs for women and children in Third World countries; and environmental protection projects.

FAWCO is a United Nations accredited NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) with Special Consultative Status to the UN Economic and Social Council. FAWCO has    liaisons at UN Headquarters. Our representatives attend UN meetings on behalf of FAWCO and focus on issues specifically related to women and children in the areas of  human rights, education health, and the environment.

FAWCO is more than just a group of people who share a common culture. It offers an opportunity to change people’s lives through charity work. Four years ago FAWCO began its “Wells For Clean Water” project. One billion people in this world don’t have clean water to drink. That’s one billion people that don’t have a safe source of water. They don’t have clean water to cook with, they bathe and wash their clothes in rivers and streams, and they can’t water their crops during a drought. Their health is poor because of the diseases they catch from polluted water, and they have little to eat because they don’t have a clean source of water for their crops or livestock. FAWCO has not only raised awareness of this problem, they have raised money to help fix the problem. Clubs from all over the world, including AWC Basel, made donations. To date, $120,000 has been raised. With our help, 6,000 people now have the promise of a healthier, brighter future and a source of clean water. We should all be very proud of this accomplishment.
